Read some reviews from people who invested a lot more money than you to own the first wave of new technology and learn if it is really worth the expense. You'd be surprised -- sometimes it's not all that great. 
Certainly after Christmas will be the right time to check out the auction sites for DVD burners that are no longer wanted. You might be lucky to find this year's model at a great discount due to a return or warrantee issue.
