It was hard for us the first few times we burned a DVD movie with our software too.  I made a checklist on Notepad that I followed until I got used to doing it. 

I use that same Notepad file every time I return to burn more DVD movies because by then, I've usually forgotten what the steps are, so it's nice to have them handy any time I want to burn a quick disc.

I figure that after wasting enough blank DVD discs (and time) on copies that didn't work, I should have just bought a packaged program. You can find them on clearance sometimes -- since they update them from time to time and you can always get by without the latest button, or scan option.
